Hirona Matsuda | bio [+]

Hirona Matsuda was born in Boston and spent time in Ireland before moving to Charlotte, NC.  She co-curated her first art show in 2007 after she graduated from the College of Charleston with degrees in anthropology and studio art.  She currently lives and works in downtown Charleston. Using primarily found or salvaged objects, Matsuda pieces together compositions that reflect on her life.  Always on the hunt for new materials for the next piece, she can be caught around town going through trash piles or backtracking to snag something that caught her eye while riding by.

She delights in finding items that others have deemed useless and refocusing the viewers attention on their aesthetic value.  The assembled compositions are a delicate balance between color and texture, light and shadow, and gravity and glue.

Hirona was one of the artists selected for 2010‘s Contemporary Charleston.  Her work has been featured in numerous Charleston exhibitions and venues including the City Gallery, Kulture Klash and the Old City Jail.
