Foodie Roundup: screw those resolutions, let’s get back to eating

Next Wednesday, I’ll be judging the BB&T Charleston Wine + Food mixologist competition at Michael Mitchell Gallery on Upper King Street. Attendees will get to swig cocktails made from Milagro Tequila and Hendrick’s Gin, crafted by some of Charleston’s best bartenders in town. It’s $35, and food will be provided by Kevin Johnson of the Grocery, the new restaurant starting a buzz in the neighborhood. Hopefully he’ll bring those fried oysters with deviled egg sauce.

Friday night, the Michael Mitchell Gallery on Upper King Street hosts the opening reception of Southern Comforts: A Collection of Lowcountry Landscape Paintings by KC Collins. Collins is a Cleveland native who has been a Piccolo Spoleto regular since being the youngest exhibitor ever accepted into the Outdoor Art Exhibit six years ago when she was a junior at Elon.

If you visited the pop-up gallery at 438 King St. during May and June’s Art for Charity event, then you know what a fantastic space it is for showcasing the work of regional artists. But if you missed out, you’ll be pleased to discover that the gallery, which began just as a pop-up for the event, is now a permanent space in Charleston. It’s in the former Nancy Koltes space in the design district.

Around Charleston, if you have a stroke of genius, you pretty much can make it materialize.
Michael Mitchell, a native of Johns Island who decided to move back home after several years, has developed an inspiring way to help charities on a local and national level. His monthlong event, Art for Charity, starts today. Stop by the 438 King Street gallery to see interesting work from artists that Mitchell hand-selected himself. The proceeds from art purchases will benefit eight charities.
